I wasn't planning on buying this big a saw ( model 40-440), but I just really like how old stuff looks and feels. I am new to scrolling and am setting up my new workshop. I have been on the lookout for all types of tools lately, and have been enjoying reading about different models of saw on this forum. I was very close to buying the Dewalt 788, as it seems to be a nice value when you factor in quality and performance. I will be using the saw to help make small parts and hope it cuts soft metals well. At any rate the saw I bought is a 24 inch Delta made in Milwaukee. I would guess it is from the 50's. It runs very smoothly and quietly and everything seems to work well. It has a blower and you adjust speeds by switching pulleys. It also has a well for lubricant .How will this saw perform compared to a new modern design? Are there any weak points or limitations to this older design? Tips on getting the most out of it appreciated. Thanks in advance. I get the feeling I will pass this on to someone else one day, as the guy who sold it to me also had a Beaver from the 20's that he was keeping and still worked well

One of the few drawbacks is the way the blade is tensioned, with a spring on the upper arm. I think once you get used to it you will really enjoy using it. I have used one on several occasions and found it cut very smoothly. Check out the OWWM site for more info. You can probably find a more exact date that the saw was manufactured.
