No stiches, it was mearly a flesh wound! Just an annoyance. I've never cut myself bad enough to need stitches with my carving knives...once with a hatchet, and once when my ex-girlfriend slammed my finger in one of the huge doors at college...she was ex at the time, and wanted to get back together, but I had moved on...so I got a crooked, scarred finger out of the deal!

Dan-welcome to the group, this group is a wealth of information.
as you can tell by some of the posts it is not all seriosness but the humor is very good natured.

bob D hope your cut heals quickly its funny that no matter how many times its been mentioned on this board to wear a glove how many people cut themselves.(me included)

while on the subject i was looking at a tutorial provided by one of the group(no names mentioned) on how to carve baskets and noticed two "bare" hands in the photo's.trust the lack of a glove was purely for asthetics.

I think we need to warn people about the rotary burrs too! I did more damage to myself with a Typhoon burr than I've ever done with a knife...Do you all wear your carving gloves when power carving?

I would suggest a leather glove with the Typhoon burrs. I had one about TWIST my finger off - which was inside my mesh glove. This was AFTER I had already removed a nice patch of skin earlier - on the same finger! Of course, the first time I was not wearing a glove

Dan,

Welcome to the group!! Bouncing S

I'm a newbie myself who has never done anything creative before. I found that Jack Price's "Carving Small Characters" to be a good book. He gives step by step directions and his guys are pretty quick to carve since they're mostly carved from 1"x1"x2". I liked it because it enabled me to carve recognizable figures fairly quickly with nothing but a knife and a couple of small gouges. If you were to get the beginner's kit from Little Shaver's you'd be all set for his book.

Thumbs up Re: Brand new to the carving scene.

You found the right place to get help as a new carver. I have been carving for a few years but I'm still learning new things to do all the time. These foklks are great and more than willing to share there methods and ideas. Mike

Hi all, on the subject of gloves and thumb/finger protectors...where can I order these online? I am in South Africa and these items are not available here, so I have simply been doing without it. The beginners kit mentioned sounds like a good deal, but I have good tools, only need the glove and protectors.
Also, any suggestions on brands/sites for carving knifes? A girl can never have too many knifes
Thanks for any info!

Hi Sue,

Just talked to a friend who does a lot of carving. He told me that you can buy them in any sporting store or one of the big box stores in the sporting department.
If you can't find them I might be able to buy them here for you and send them to you.
Just email me.

Mike
