Newbie

I'm another lurker, newbie, wanna be carver.
My handle comes from my hobby, my attitude, and my retirement. I've been scrollsawing for about 10 years, but
I've aquired a Foredom series, a big bag of Enloe
palm chisels, carving books and magazines, and several unfinished projects. I've cut a boot and a carousel horse from pine several years ago, so I have an idea what is involved. I found the horse plans in a wood magazine and it took me 3 months to do with a dremel. The Foredom is what I'm mainly interested in, as I have major RA problem. I've found a local carving club that I intend to try out, but have been extremely busy with the holidays.
(Grandkids, don't ya know!)
Everything I've learned has been from magazines, books, internet, and bad cuts on my part.
I look forward to reading this board every morning, and seeing the excellent work everyone does.

Welcome aboard, sounds llike a great garage sale! This is a wonderful place to read, learn and a try to sort out the confusions and frustrations of a new hobby. Absolute pros mix with those of us who might spend three or four nights a month carving. People with 20 years experience share with 20 minutes experience. People with thousands of dollars of tools coach those with a $12 set of hobby knives. People who carve $40 per board foot exotic stock inspire folks who carve wood recycled from pallets pulled from a dumpster at the local grocergy. Good Luck and Merry Christmas. Good advice Chip on keeping the red stuff on the inside.
I think every knife and carving tool i have has extraced a sample of the red stuff from me. I finally broke down and bought a good cutting (carving) glove and some finger guards.

Bandaid would not give me voting shares of their stock or pay me dividends, so I decided the glove and finger guards was the way to go

Welcome Mike, good to have you with us! Ah Chip was right, this is a terrific place to come for advice, everyone is very willing to share and help out. I came here three years ago a totally confused 'want to be' carver and have learned 'lifetimes' of information, plus made some wonderful new friends!

Welcome Mike and all other newbies!
We learn from everything we try--even from the bad cuts. But we especially learn from associating with each other.

Grandkids are great--they are what keeps us going and even when they cut into our carving time--they are still great. I figure I can carve til I die or can't carve any longer, but these grandkiddies will grow up and away sooooo quickly. So lay down the tools and go play. It will keep.
