Another good thing to use for stropping is pumice powder, the same stuff your Dad used to use to finish off polishing his varnished woodcrafts. It's extremely dry and very fine, but a small pinch of it on a strop does a great job.

I agree with Fred ----- Dunkle's Yellowstone (actually PINK) is what I find best for a hand strop. I like Flexcut's yellow compound for my power wheels.
