Antiquing & Oil Paints - Scroll Saw Woodworking & Crafts Message Board

I usually paint with acrylics and antique with a gel stain, but I want to do a new carving in oil paint and wondered if the gel stain would be as effective. Any ideas?

It just occured to me that if I seal an oil painted carving the same way I seal an acrylic painted carving, the gel stain should be just fine. So let me change the question:

Can you apply a laquer finish to oil paint and, if so, how long do you have to wait for the oil paint to dry?

I have no idea other that laquer doesn't normally go well over other paints unless they are very very well cured, and sometimes not even then.

You must have some scrap wood laying around that you could try it on.

Hey Kim I use Krylon 1311 matte finish to seal the carvings I paint with oil paints. It not only helps the oils to dry but does not put a high shine on the piece. I guess I have no idea if it is a laquer or not.
