Snipe; a small brown, long billed bird similar to a woodcock, habitating uplaland
hardwoods and shorelines.

also a 'bite' taken outof the ends of boardss as they are run through a planer, resulting in about two to four inches of thinner stock on one or both ends.

Ah Colin, you're from Canada and don't know what snipe are? Check with you local Boy Scout Troop and ask them to take you on a snipe hunt. I'm sure they'd be more then happy too!
