Default Help with portrait

I have been breathing saw dust for about 50 years with the last 15 doing scroll saw work. Recently I wanted to try portraits. I have a picture that I am having trouble converting to a pettern. I use coyote and the Gimp. Is there anyone that could convert this picture to a pattern for me so that I can see what I am doing wrong. Any help is appreciated.
