Default Have a Question for Carole Rothman

I have just purchased your new book and can't wait tell I receive it. Mean while I am in the process of getting ready for when it comes. I have been on
the website you recommended at klingspor's and picked up some supplies for sanding. The question I have for you is, concerning the inflatable round sander. I have done my share of sanding as many have. But I have not used this type of sander before. So what type of pressure do you put in it, and as far as keeping the sanding sleeves on I know it is done by the pressure in the rubber ball. So when you have to change the sleeve do you have to let the air out of the ball.

Thanks for purchasing the book, Bob--hope you make many beautiful bowls. The round inflatable sander is a really neat tool. You need to buy the pump to inflate it. The sequence is to tighten the nut on top to make a seal, slip the sleeve on the ball, making sure it is seated, then pump up the ball. I usually make it firm, but you can adjust it. To change sleeves, you need to let out the air by unscrewing the nut, and tilting the stem to release the pressure so it deflates. Then you tighten up the nut and start over. The process is very quick and easy. I still have the first one I bought, and have sanded well over 100 bowls with it. Buy one or two packages of asserted sleeves, and you'll be good to go. It's a little pricey initially, but it's a really versatile tool. I chuck it into the drill press, although it can fit on a flex shaft. Let me know if you have any more questions, and good luck.

Thanks for the information Carole, I understand it a whole lot better now. Just have to wait now tell it arrives. You mentioned that you have to buy a pump. I know that they make mini pumps designed for these inflatable sanders. But was wondering, I read where they sell these sanders, that the mini pump will work, but a hand bike pump will work as well. Do you have any preference. And is this true that a bike pump will work too. I appreciate your help, and may need some sanding techniques when I get that far.

Bob, I bought the pump they sold with the sander, because it's little and easy to control. But if the hand bike pump will work as well, then go with it.
