Default Lang Clock question

Dale,
I've cut and assembled the Lang clock many times over in my mind and I'm now getting ready to cut wood. All the wood is milled and cut to size (based on the materials list), but pieces K and N/NA aren't working for me. I'm not sure if I'm missing something, but when I look at the base fretwork front (K) and the base overlay/underlay (N/NA) they don't add up. If I understand it correctly, piece K is flush to the bottom of the shelf (F) and N/NA is flush to the top of the shelf. Since the shelf is 1/2" thick, I would think N/NA would be 1/2" longer than K, but the materials list calls for N/NA to be 3/4" longer. Is N/NA intentionally 1/4" longer than K or should the bottom points line up?

Hi Bruce. First off, I apologize for the confusion. Secondly, thank you for finding my clock design worthy of your time and materials.
You have your pieces cut to size as per the material list,so it should be ok still. You have it right that part N and NA actually are 1/2 inch longer than part k once it is made. The reason it is 3/4inch longer at this stage in your building is to allow you 1/4th inch to play with at the bottom end of that piece for scrolling, instead of having the point right to the end of the board.Once part N/NA are glued together and you cut the outer edge, it should be 1/2 inch longer than part K, and you are right, that allows that part to be fastened to the backside of the shelf part.
In front of me right now I have a copy of the original drawings I made,as well as a copy of the new clock book just put out by Fox chapel, and I do see one discrepency , which is the same discrepency I noted when The Lang was published in the magazine a couple years ago. Somehow, sadly, this must have gotten overlooked when the corrections were made prior to the book being printed. On the drawing for Part K where it says also is part N is actually false.Part N should be 1/2 inch longer than K, that 1/2 inch should be at the top end of Part N, so that it does tuck into the shelf. The shape of it is exactly the same, with the exception that it should be 1/2 inch longer than Part K once cut So... when attaching your pattern to cut out the profile of Parts N/NA after the frets are cut out on them and they have been glued together, use the pattern for Part K,and attach that pattern 1/2 inch down from the top end of N/NA , and it will come out correct.
If you would like Bruce, PM me your mailing address and I will mail you out a copy of my original set, it may be a little more clear.I have trouble explaining it, so hopefully I have helped you out. The good part is that your wood is still ok as long as you cut it to the materials cut list. again, I apologize for the confusion.
