Default Delta 40-640 scroll saw

Hello. I have just been given a Delta 40-640 scroll saw. Unfortunately it came without a manual or instructions. I do not even know how to fix the blade correctly, nor do I have any new blades. Any help would be gratefully welcomed.

Hi,

I googled your saw, and found the following site has the manual for $15, which lists instructions and parts. I did not check out every listing, but if you google the saw, you'll be able to see what's out there.

Home, also listed on ebay for the same price.

I don't know why it came up "Home" but let me know if the link doesn't work.

Old Woodworking Machines has a PDF copy of the Delta 40-640

OWWM - Delta Manufacturing Co. - Publication Reprints - Model 40-640 20" Variable Speed Scroll Saw

Not much info from the Delta manual, kind of leaves a bit to be desired.
search around OWWM for the parts lists and parts drawings. It is there.

Your saw is over 15 years old. Delta (currently owned by Black and Decker now) has very little support for old Delta tools. Old support web site:
DeWALT ServiceNET - Official Online Store for DeWALT, Porter Cable, Delta, and Black and Decker Parts. (Site not up tonight as I compose this posting.)

I just hope you got the special blade chuck key with your saw.

Oh, yes.... about blades: many pin-less blades made today are made to a metric length which is a bit more than 5-3/32 long; maybe closer than 1/8 inch longer than 5". Some old delta scroll saw machines (NOT ALL!) were limited (individually due to factory tolerances) to a maximum of 5-1/16 or even less. You may need to snip off 1/8 inch off your blades. East to tell--If your saw breaks blades just running without cutting wood under 8 minutes, you got problems.

Buy your blades On-Line. Search this forum for long discussions on blades. Or just Google for scroll saw blades.

Big Bri. Try DEWALT: High Performance Industrial Tools and Accessories Then search for a local repair shop using their service center locator. They own Delta and Porter Cable now and have been very helpful to me in the past. Their online site does not have the manual available but does have the blow-up diagram of the saw and the parts list.

Graybeard Phil is right on with the site for a saw diagram and parts list. I have the same saw and really like it. If you do not have the bottom chuck key, the site still has them for about $12. Also, it is a good idea to get the upper arm quick release which they have. That particular saw does not have a quick release for the bottom arm. Sure wish it did.....Good Luck Ron T.
