Our school is having an "Awards Banquet" (year end school program). This year the theme is Patriotic. My kindergatren class(2 kids) and a 3rd grader, and a 4the grader are preforming "Yankee Doodle Dandy". Our school is very small, with 12 kids in all. The boys wanted to spin rifles while music is playing. Sounded good at the time. Now I am having trouble finding rifles they came handle. They all have real guns, but htey are too heavy to spin. No budget for purchasing Toy guns. I have wood and a saw, thought I could make them. Thought about taking real gun and tracing it on 2x4 and cutting it out as a last solution. |

I was going to suggest tracing around a real firearm and cutting it as you described.Something like a model 94 30-30 would be probably the best size to use. If you want them looking a little more realistic than just tracing, trace from the butt or the stock to the end of the forearm, and cut them there, then bore a hole into the forearm end and insert a suitable sized dowel into there to act as the barrel. Then, a crafty paintjob, and your little army will be all set! Good luck, and save us a picture or two!

Check with your local high school drill team. I made a pattern and rifles by tracing a drill team rifle and cutting them out of 2" pine with a bandsaw. Router the edges with a1/2 inch rounding over bit. The drill team guns do not have barrels and are designed to spin. I hope this helps.

Thank you all for all the sugestions. I think we will just use real ones. Son pointed out that men during the time "Yankee Doodle" was writen the men were un skilled at drill. Leave it to my 10 yr old genius to set me straight.
