Does any one know if the photos in calendars are copyrighted, or is it that if I buy the calendar, I can do whatever I please with the picture? Thank you Stan PS: Kevin & Sylvia, I am still alive. |

I'm no expert, but I believe if you buy the calendar, it is yours to use as you wish. Just don't copy them. Several of us use calendars and Christmas cards to make puzzles. If I'm wrong, someone will correct me.

I hate to say this but the photos on the calendars are most definitely copyrighted. I inquired about this very thing a couple of years ago and the response that I got back from the one that I was interested in was that I could purchase a license to use the photos at $400 per photo per year. Others may have different license prices or no licensing at all. But the photos are copyrighted none the less. Hope this answers your question. Steve

I'm sure almost all of the photos used in commercial calendars are copyright. Copying the photo (making a pattern of it, photocopying it for a puzzle, etc.) would be the same as copying a photo from any other restricted source. Using the physical calendar in a puzzle is probably ok. I assume that it would have the same doctrine of first-sale rights as using the photo in a collage, although the de minimus doctrine would be less relevant if the whole image is from the photo. Wikipedia has a discussion of some of these legal issues here: Collage - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia --Rob I'm not a lawyer and this is not a legal opinion. |

I'd have to agree with the above. The actual copying and reproduction of the image would contravene copyright, but using the original picture as you see fit would not. Eg, if you purchase a magazine you can cut out the pictures, frame them or value add and resell them, you can resell the whole magazine, but you can not make copies and sell the copies. That is my understanding and I like it that way

that's all I thought about as I was cutting out the Peterbuilt logo for my project. I look at it this way, the project is on my wall and I'm not out selling their logo so I'm good.... Trout

Yep, they are copyrighted. Years ago I bought a calendar and read the fine print on it. After reading that I wasn't sure I could even hang it up as a calendar without being in violation of something. Never did buy another calendar by that artist.

I would say it should be OK to use actual pictures that have been cut out of the calendar, not copying. The way I look at it - is that if you bought the item, that is the calendar, you're free to manipulate it the way you want to. You can resell that calendar itself, right?

My intention is to use the original calendar page only, no photo copying. I have read all the info on the calendars that I want to use, and they do not say much except mfg. in China. Another Question, PPS slide shows, what are your thoughts on taking the slide show apart, and using the photos of whatever I like? And this would require reprinting of the single slides.
