Hello out there. Can anyone tell me where I can locate blue pine lumber for scroll saw projects? Any idea of what the prices are? I'm located in the Ft. Worth, Tx area. Thanks ... John (jrosstex@aol.com) |

Hi John - I'm sure you'll get some answers from board members regarding places who actually advertise selling blue pine but I'd also suggest the following. The blue in blue pine is a fungal disease and as such wood with this 'problem' its normally undesirable by furniture makers and it tends to get sorted by timberyards into the lower grades of timber. If you have any timberyards around you that sell cheap grades of pine it might pay you do go scout around them and ask to look through their poorer quality wood piles. Explain what you are looking for to the stockyard guys as opposed to the person over the sales counter and you'll probably strike lucky. I found a couple of boards the other day exactly by this method without going to look for this material. I just happened to be selecting a couple of boards from a stack of second grade timber and pulled out a heavily contaminated and really nice blue board at which point the yard guy sheepishly told me that that was third grade timber stacked in the heap by mistake. Lucky me! Just a work of caution. Contaminated blue pine can often have wood beetle associated with it so when you do find some check for bore holes in the wood and as a precaution give a couple of applications of a good quality pesticide. Make sure you do this in the open air as you don't want to breathing this stuff in. Hope you strike lucky!
