Question mesquite turning

I have never worked with or turned mesquite. There are places around that sells mesquite wood for smoking or grilling. Could a person go out and buy one of these logs meant for smoking food and use it for turning on a lathe?

Hi, EButler, I would like to know this also. I love Mesquite. slow growing. in my area. I sure don't see why not. it wouldn't be cool for lathe work. all wood is for the talented. just try it. . your friend Evie

Mesquite is incredibly stable...you can turn green wood right to a finished product! Great stuff.

You can probably find pieces suitable for small spindle turnings from the "firewood and grilling" sources of mesquite. Larger pieces of wood from these sources are likely to have checking and cracks which will make it difficult to turn larger pieces. Several vendors do supply larger turning blanks of mesquite. PM me for some sources.
