1/8" Baltic birch is a very common wood used for portrait type cuttings but by no means is it the only type of wood used. Oak ply is also a very common choice. I've cut portrait type work in slabs of mahogany, ash, walnut, osage orange and maple also.

I went to my local Home Depot and got 1/4 Birch (not baltic birch) and 1/4 oak ply wood to see how they saw, they work very well in my opinion. These are furniture grade plywoods. You can get them in 2'X2' pieces for about $7. Or you can go to the full 4'X8' sheets for about $24. Thats in my neck of the woods, prices may be different else where.

This is what I use.

I also use HD, but I am very picky and only use 1/4 BB plywood from there. I buy a 4 X 8 sheet and they rip it into qyarters for free, aot cheaper that way. The grain must have character or I don't buy

Slons woodshop has some very interesting type of ply, hickory, cherry, mahogony, and plain BB. I hope this helps

I have done a few and have been using 3/4 wood. Used Aspen, Poplar, Walnut(I love walnut), Butternut.

The reason I use 3/4 wood is that I am a begginer and do not own a Bandsaw. I purchased 3/4 thinking thicker is better. But now it is very hard to frame them. I just use a router(just bought) to do the edges. I almost always use a FD Ultra Reverse #5 blade.

I agree, luanne isnt a very good wood for scroll saw work, but I do use it for my backer boards. Its cheap and I paint them anyway.
