Default Dave Van Ess Nesting Baskets

I think either I am totally confused, or there is some major mistake in the patterns for these.Pattern in the Special Holiday issue. While cutting out the rings, I have run into some trouble. On the piece thats used to cut the rings using angle 1.... When I get back to that piece for angle 4, I assume I am to cut around it following the pattern and directions on step 3, I would be cutting around it on that line to the inside if the gray shading to get to where my rings for angle 4 are. The problem is that by cutting on the line is only just barely removing any wood, and only on the very top edge, it does not make that ring beveled like I think its supposed to.I definately followed the directions as printed, and somethings not right. I was contacted a few days ago by a friend of mine that was trying to cut these and he couldnt get some part to work out so I told him I'd try cutting them, and everything went smooth until I got to the 4th angle.(I am using 3/4th" walnut and a FD Polar #7.) Got any advice for me????? Thanks

Kind of funny, I was going to post the same question tonight. I cut them today and had the same exact problem. So I actually cut 2 rungs out of another board to get them done. Here are my thoughts.....My table was tilted to the left and I made my block just as he said. I started my entry cut on the left side of the wood, cutting clockwise. Afterwards trying to figure out where I went wrong, I noticed that in photo # 3 the it shows the entry cut on the right side which would be a counter-clockwise cut. I believe this is where I messed up. Maybe I am out in left field here but I think it would work that way.
Which side and direction did you cut the basket out?

OK, I see where your coming from.Following the directions, I too tipped my table to match the angle block.I then cut in, following the entry line on the pattern, so my main piece of wood was on the right side of the blade. So once a ring was cut, my piece to cut the next ring was tapered so the pattern side is smaller than the table side of the wood. You are right though, the picture shows it on the opposite side. The picture also shows the same pattern, except for a couple things. One thing, it says tulip, so i assume this pattern was originally designed to be a flower. Second thing, take note of the lines drawn for blade entry to the cut for each ring.On the pattern itself, it is not that way, it is backwards to the way it should be to cut in and follow the pattern. When I was scratching my head at the saw, I thought maybe I was going around in the wrong direction, but realized if following that dotted line, that it couldnt be possible to enter and follow the line in that direction. as for cutting clockwise or counterclockwise.. my blade was following the line in a counterclockwise direction, spinning my wood clockwise.I never like it described in the clock direction because people think of that direction by two different ways depending on wood rotation or blade direction on the line. But yes, I think you and I interpreted the project the same way.I am thinking now that I should recopy the patterns again, and draw that dotted line going the other way, and enter so I am cutting in from the opposite direction, like it shows on photo 3. Kinda irks me though, as I was doing really good on it until this point, and used up a nice hunk of walnut. Maybe mine were just meant to be dishes instead of bowls, sighhhhh.

Hi Guys -

So sorry about the confusion. We're running another project similar to these bowls in the spring issue....

When Dave submitted the project originally, they were called Tulip Bowls - because of the shape. We re-named them to Nesting Bowls. As you can see on photo 1 - his entry lines actually extended to either side of the pattern lines. He did this so you could enter from the top or the bottom - we changed the pattern - our bad. As long as you keep the stock on the side of the table that is tilted down, you should be okay.

The rings should be widest at the top - near the pattern, and taper down toward the bottom of the stock. Whether you enter from the top or bottom - just be sure to keep the wood on the side with the table tilted down.

Hope that makes sense - Bob can maybe clarify when he gets in this morning. I do apologize for the error.

Default Dave Van Ess here!

I am sorry I haven't responsed sooner. I have been developing these baskets for over ten years and things that seem clear to me sometimes aren't. I have attached my patterns and a drawing of the assembly. I believe this makes it clearer.

For those that are intersted I have developed software that allows the user to design their own baskets.

You said you finished then glued together. How do you get them to stay glued? Everytime I finish something first then glue, it never stays glued. Shannon, remember your question what is a project stopper for you? These 3 words stop me almost every time - "Tilt the table....."

Default Dave Again

I use HOT STUFF Special T cynoarclic glue and a spray accerelerator. I put glue on one ring, spray the other , and press down with a flat piece of plywood.

Betty
I have the same feeling about "tilt the table". I read "degrees" and I go to the next project...
tried a degree tilting once and it didn't work so I stay away from them.
