Question for John Nelson and Ben Fink (and anyone else who can help) Hi, I'm new to the bb and need some help. On page 25 of the HOLIDAY2008 (ISSUE 33) is a pattern for a leaping frog bookmark. The materials list call for 1/32" Baltic birch plywood. Where can get Baltic birch that thin? The thinest I can find is 1/8" which is far to thick for a book mark. I have found an excellent source for various thickness of "thin" plywood. Would you believe the local GROCERY stores! Usually in Dec. or Jan. throug March they get grapes and pears in PLYWOOD boxes from Argentina. Ask the produce manager to save them for you....you might have to be there at a specific time to pick them up but its well worth the effort. The plywood is just right (3/16" to about 3/8") for the Holiday Silhouettes on page 44 and Hardwood Ornaments on Page 62. |

I am neither, Ben or John, BUT, you can get the real thin stuff at places like Micheals, or Hobby Lobby, or at hobby shops, ever some walmarts sell the 1/32 thick in the crafting dept.I think its usually finnish birch plywood actually, but it is the thin stuff your lookin for. Here is a look at that thin plywood FINNISH BIRCH AIRCRAFT PLYWOOD (METRIC) from Aircraft Spruce , oh, and about free thin ply from the grocery store... Sometimes they have some little tiny oranges called clementines that come in a nice thin wooden crate too

I just ordered some from Sloan's Woodshop. It hasn't arrived yet, but knowing Sloan's I'm sure it will be great. There customer service is the best. Cathy in NE |

I just cut a stack of those frogs tonight. I can usually find the very thin wood at Michael's craft store. It's more expensive than what's listed at Sloan's, but you don't have to worry about shipping. If you have a Michael's nearby, look for coupons in the Sunday paper - Usually 40% off a regularly priced item which really helps. |

I get mine from Wildwood at Scroll Saw Patterns, Plans, Scrollsaw Blades, Clock Parts, Woodworking Supplies A 12"x12" piece is 3.95 or 3.45 if you buy 10 or more. Easy to stack cut 10 of them. sawdustus

I found some 1/32 solid white oak ( 18 to 24" long by 3 to 4 " wide ) a few months ago on Ebay. So I bought it. I have use some of for overlays. I am going to cut a couple of the bookmarks to see if the wood will hold up. I think it might be to thin.

Just an idea, but you probably could use thick cardstock paper or thin cardboard too and stack cut a bunch at once.

Janette just mentioned what I was going to say. I was also thinking that some type of thin plastic could be used too if it was sandwiched between cardboard or heavy paper.

I haven't cut any 1/32, but I did make some 1/16 bookmarks (walnut) last summer and had no problems. Have a small stick of 1/16 maple I'm hoping to turn into lighthouse bookmarks any day now. I will be very interested to follow this thread and see how the "near veneer" turns out.
