Question Windmill Clock, Issue #28 question

I've started preping wood for the Windmill Clock by Pedro Lopez. The plans call for a 3 5/16" diameter clock insert, but the clock opening in the pattern measures 2 3/4". Was there a misprint on the size insert to be used or am I unaware of something else here?
Thanks,
Ralph

Hi Ralph. I don't have that issue handy right now but I went to Klockit to research clock inserts. They have an 83mm (3 5/16) clock face that requires a 2 7/8 inch mounting hole. He probably used a clock fit-up from a different manufacturer that requires a 2 3/4" mounting hole. Just my best guess and hope this helps. BTW welcome aboard!!

Hi Neal,
I appreciate your feed back. The article lists : "Special Sources: 3 5'16-diameter clock inserts are available from Klockit,..." . I'll go back to the site and do a little more research. The pieces in the plan could likely be adjusted to 2 7/8, like the one you found. There just isn't room to make those pieces have a full 3 5/16 cutout. I didn't want to order one that couldn't possible fit.
Thanks,
Ralph

Hello
I have found that I like to have the insert or other hardware before I make the clock. I believe photocopying is the easiest to blame, (it is not uncommon for the pattern hole to be slightly out of round) but miscommunication of any kind creates problems. By measuring the size of hole required from the insert, and checking the fit of the front, (so that the rim of the insert fits nicely into the scrolling in front) I have avoided dissapointments. I also check the depth of the movement fits inside the clock body, etc. Cutting the hole for the insert with the scrollsaw and finish fitting by drum-sanding will give a nice firm fit.

Default Clock Sizes

The drilled hole is normally slightly smaller than the finished size of the clock. That way the flange? around the edge of the clock covers the hole. For example I use mostly mini inserts that measure 1 7/16" OD and I drill a 1 3/8" hole to seat them in. Also, especially if you are going to make a lot of clocks, you are better off buying the proper size Forstner bit. That way you can drill a flat, blind, perfectly sized hole for the clock. You can usually trust the dimension given on the clock plans.
