| Dremel 1800 Hello All,
Sorry if this has been posted before but I am new to the forum. I am looking to by a scroll saw and I live in Italy. there are several models available here, a german type Hegner (about 1000 USD) a Dremel 1800 (about 400 USD) and two delta models 40-530 (300 usd) and a 40-570 (600 USD). I would like to do wooden puzzels in soft maple about 1 inch thick, intarsia and try my hand at marquetry. I am leaning towards the Dremel as Fine Woodworking gave it a good review. Does anyone have an opinion on these and what would be suited to 3/4 to 1 inch maple? It's a lot of money to spend and I thought better to ask the experts first! The used stuff on EBAY here is all low cost low power so used is not an option.
Thanks
Jim |

| Welcome to the group Jim. I cannot comment on the above saws but someone will be along to help you.

| Hi Jim, welcome aboard. I don't know about this particular model, but I have the Dremel 1860 as a backup and it's a darned fine machine. Also, their customer service is top notch. Good luck. |

| If you will also be doing marquetry I personally would go with the Hegner.
All of the Delta's that I have worked with have a very agressive front to back cutting motion that is a real hindrance (my opinion) for very fine work.
I have never seen or used the Dremel. The only Dremel I had was very old and used pined blades. It was a stamped sheet metal piece of ---.

| I have the Dremel 1800 and find it to be a fair entry level scroll saw. It has worked well for me so far. I don't tend to use it much, as I do more on the lathe, but I'm trying to moderate my time better between the two. I do like the 6" sanding disc on the Dremel as well.
Cheers,
James |

| Like Mike I have a Dremel which now serves me as a back up, mine is an 1800 and it did me right but I outgrew it fairly quick. Dremel has great customer service which makes it worth considering. My only gripe if any was the blade clamps which I thought were a bit primitve considering what the competition is offering now days.

| Hi
I am on to my third saw and all had limitations, until I got my Hegner. I would suggest that if you can afford it, get the best you can buy. So far, my Hegner wins every time.
