I am going to carve a wooden frog. I wish it to be lifelike in appearance. Here is where I have little experience to go forward: I have been looking at chinese puzzle boxes. I want to carve the frog in such a way as to have the mouth hinged and able to be opened by pressing the eyes down. If anyone has knowlege of such types of carvings please pass on as much as you can. And Or links to help me find out where this type of carving is done. |

| Well, I know when I press on my eyes, my mouth flies open but I don't know how it works. Good Luck!

If you carved each eye piece with a dowel like piece and a catch like the bottom half of these --] [-- and then carved the frog with a hollow center in the back of the mouth like this [__ __] it would work. You would need some spings though, perhaps two to push the eyes back out and a coil spring to move the mouth up and down. Now if you can follow that and it makes sense, we're both in trouble. If you mean just by carving, you would need to carve some some large gears. Best I can do.... Mike |

I agree with Mike D. Obviously you must carve your frog in sections that are temporarily cut apart with a thin saw and then glued back together after you have hollowed out the cavities and solved the mechanical details of the mouth opening and closing. > |

| I recently Picked up a book on E-Bay Whittling and woodcarving (E J Tangerman) that covers some of those aspects movement and hinges
