Ptarmigan Bird Carving Pattren

Hi, I need some help from my Carving buddies out there. I was asked by a good comtomer today to carve her a Ptarmigan (from the Grouse Family) I think? It's a Christmas present for her Son who hunts them. Does anyone have a pattren I could purchase? Gergie, My E-mail address is rvgergie@iw.net

there are two ptarmigans there, willow and white.

Hi...I am stuck a bit the same way....I made a loon but when I look at it there was something that was not right, no I don't have a pattern just a book on it...First I would like to know if there is a difference between a pattern and a plan?....and second would there be a pattern (plan) that can tell me exactly for example the size of the head for the size of the body I have....etc...and where can I find such a thing?...

Jude, if you have the body carved and just need a proper sized head, here is what I would suggest. Take the pattern you used for the body, and put it up on a wall. Then with either an opaque projector (if you don't have one, try the art department at the local high school or jr. college) or a slide projector, project the head onto the body pattern. You can then adjust the size until it looks right. You cn then take the top view and match it to the side view for doing the top.

I've used this method several times for making patterns of trout, that I don't always have a complete picture of (superimposing a missing tail from one different sized photo to my pattern.)

Whatever way you call it, either a patttern or a plan, it should have at least a side and top view, and preferably a bottom, front and back. In some instances there may also ve auxilliary views.

Some patterns are more complete than others, for instance some fish pattens may include scaling information, and some bird patterns may include feather definintion sketches.
